The PDP-8 (http://www.pdp8.net/) was the first computer I ever met (high school circa 1980). My first assignment was to write a program that would multiply 2 by 3. The catch was that we had to use the binary rocker switches on the front panel (http://www.pdp8.net/pdp8i/pics/pdp8i_frontpanel.shtml?small) to enter the commands! This is how I learned true respect for higher level languages like lingo (not to mention that useful device known as a keyboard!).
Before getting paid to play with computers, I had served as a drummer in the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps (http://www.ogfdc.org/) where, yes, I wore a wig (http://www.ogfdc.org/pictures/index.php?pictureID=107) for living ;-). After the army, I studied computer science at George Mason University (http://www.gmu.edu/) and then in my home state at the University of Vermont (http://www.uvm.edu/).
I now work for Laureate Learning Systems (http://www.llsys.com/) in Winooski, VT where we create software for language development. The company was founded in 1982 and I joined them 8 years later. First as an artist and then shortly afterwards as a programmer (assembly with applesoft basic). I started working with Director in 1995. These days I'm senior developer and network administrator. My sysadmin experiences have drawn me into the unix realm, which inspired my first article (http://www.director-online.com/buildArticle.php?id=1148) at Doug. Here's a corner of my website where I share code snippets (http://www.putnamhill.net/codeshop/) with the rest of the director community.
